No, I didn't like it at first, but I've warmed to Windows 8 over the last few months, especially after Stardock's brilliant release of Start8, and now I don't mind using it at all.  In fact, I'm that comfortable with it I'm going to make it my primary OS and run it on my No.1 machine

Yup, given that I read AMD's FX series CPU's were designed with Win 8 in mind, I reckon it'll really kick some butt on this 8 core beasty, with 16gb of RAM and 2 Corsair ...

It hadn't occurred to me just how much junk I had collected over the years until I needed to find a couple of parts for the rig I'm building for my mother.  It's like 5 deep plastic storage bins and 3 sets of 4 drawers... all reasonably full.... and I haven't even rounded up what's in the cupboard underneath the stairs, which has a multitude of cases, monitors and other stuff.

Anyhow, I thought that I'd start wheedling through it and tossing out some of the old, o...

Damned party poopers, Microsoft has enables blocks to prevent users booting directly to the desktop, thus forcing them to boot into the much disliked Metro UI.  Furthermore, MS has blocked 3rd party start buttons and start menus, thus forcing users to return to Metro frequently to access their apps, etc.  Click here to see full story

So, it seems Microsoft is determined to foist Metro upon us, like it or not.  Well I have a message for Microsoft [as do probably many, many other...

Hey folks, if you have Acronis True Image but have not as yet updated to the 2012 version, take a look here to purchase Acronis 2012 and here to view more information about the Plus Pack.  However, DO NOT purchase the Plus Pack via this link.  Purchase Acronis 2012 or upgrade your current version of Acronis True Image via the 1st link, and the Plus Pack is free until July 31st 2012.

The Plus pack provides additional options like backing up to PC's that have undergone major hardw...

 This.....

            arrives at my place Monday.

It's the new Thermaltake Chaser Mk 1... see external link for more info.

The main reason I'm upgrading my case is to have access to 2 front USB3 ports and an eSata port up front as well.  More importantly, however, is the HDD dock on top, allowing me to plug in any SATA drive [HDD, SSD] without power or USB cables... and I do have several drives without cases, so i...

As the title suggests, Shaunna's desktop PC went guts up and is in dire need of some replacement parts to get it up and running again.  I've ordered the necessary parts and hopefully they'll be here later today so's I can rebuild it for her.

Yeah, it has been acting up intermittently for quite a while now, so I wasn't at all surprised that it decided to kark it yesterday.... tho I reckon it was a stubborn bastard for not dying sooner and saving me endless hours of pul...

Okay, so I had a second 500gb Seagate Expansion portable HDD go guts up and I took it back to the point of purchase with the intention of getting a refund.  Yeah, right.  It was a day past the 14 day refund cutoff so I was offered another to replace it instead.  "Not bloody likely," I said: "this is the second one I've brought back that's totally died, so no, I don't want another one."

With the refund policy as it was, and the sales clerk not budging, it meant I tha...

I recently had to migrate my OS from one HDD to another due to the old one pretty much dying of old age [was probably close to 6 y/o], and now the drive I migrated to is playing up.  The thing is, this newer drive isn't that old... probably 16 months and just out of warranty, so it is annoying.  A lot of the time I can hear it thrashing and making unhealthy sounds, so I ducked out today and bought myself a 120gb OCZ Vertex 2 to house my main OS, which is Win 7 Home Premium x64.

Yeah, so I had to move my OS to another drive and I'm unable to get Impulse to restore my archived apps.  Impulse says it is installing them, then activating them, but moments later the apps return to being available.

I tried creating new archives but no go, and I tried resetting data but that seemed to o nothing as I'm on a clean install with no SD apps.  If anyone has any ideas, a fix for this I muchly appreciate it, though at the end of the day I think I'll have...

I just found this piece and thought it a rather interesting use of Playstation 3 game consoles.  The USAF has literally joined a 1000 or more of them together to create a supercomputer for imaging purposes and problem solving.

See the linked article and let us know your thoughts.

I never really saw myself up for a portable computing device... until now, that is.

My niece bought 6 of these eMachines eM350's for her kids and step-kids at Christmas time and my interest was immediately aroused when I noticed how they were all networking together as well as connecting to the main desktop PC in the house. It occurred to me that if I were sick in bed or unable to get downstairs to my main PC (arthritis and stairs) I could access the net plus my files on that ...

I've recently been builing my daughter a PC from old parts left over from various upgrades over the years and what a pain it has been... from beginning to end.

First off, the 450 watt generic PSU wasn't up for the job and it wouldn't fire up properly/stay fired up, so it had to be replaced.

With money being a bit tight these days that took a while, but once it was installed we were back in business... for a very short while.  Yup, everything appeared to be working as it should, ...

I have a X-Craft Cooler Master external HDD case and just replaced a 250gig drive with a 500gig IDE Western Digital WD5000AAKB Caviar SE16 in it (formatted and pertitioned into two equal segments), but I have a problem in that neither of my OSes (Vista and XP Pro) recognises it anymore.... same case, USB cable and port, yet it does not show up in Disk Management/My Computer as before.

I tried uninstalling in Device Manager, reinstalling using different USB leads in different ports but still n...

Just wondering if anybody might know why this would happen... twice now I've had this loud screaming sound (can't be sure if it's coming from the speakers or my PC, could be both) which lasts about 10 - 15 seconds.

There appears to be no damage afterwards as everything works as it should do, but I'm wondering if it may be something to do with the BOIS, CPU, etc, or whether it may be outside interference affecting my Logitech X-530 speaker system, being that I do hear pops and etc when other e...

I've been using the much easier to use IconPackager and really love it, but I'd love it even more (pretty please, Stardock) if we could have the option to apply additional desktop icons to shortcuts for various programs/apps, etc.... something akin to the option to add or remove file types.

OK, so I'm getting lazy in my old age, but yeah, it would great if IP could do this when changing themes, rather than users having to manually change icons for desktop shortcuts.

Pretty please, ...
