Okay, so my line in and router is downstairs where our main PCs are, and I want to connect various devices to a wired connection upstairs. Thing is, networking is not my thing and I'm not sure how to go about it.  I did a search and got a whole lot of gobbledygook I could make neither head nor tail of...and pages of sites wanting to sell me shit.  Maybe I wasn't asking the right questions. Anyway, I have an ethernet cable running from the router to upstairs and a net enabled...

As the title suggests, I have begun upgrading again.  However, being that the guts of my rig perform more than satisfactorily and it's fast as well as reliable, I'm upgrading some addons to extend its use and/or make it more enjoyable. First on the list is this.... a LG E2742V-BN 27" LED monitor. I decided to replace the 32" TV I'm using as a monitor with this because i/we could use an extra TV upstairs and I don't want to sacrifice in screen size too much... and t...

Okay people, so I get a newsletter from an online shopping establishment I've done business with in the past, and this just grabbed my immediate attention... a pen device that turns your regular Windows 8 notebook into a 'Touch' screen device.  All you do is connect the USB transmitter/receiver and the pen works wirelessly.  Bloody brilliant!!!  For more info, check it out here and here and here Hmmm, I'm thinking I'd like one of these.  For 99 bucks, n...

As the title suggests, Nokia is looking to Windows tablets as its next venture, which seems a natural progression after the renowned phone maker teamed with Microsoft to release the first Windows 8 phone.  The Nokia CEO was speaking in Sydney Australia about this development today, February 5... see more here. Hmmm, this certainly is interesting, particularly for Nokia Lumia owners who are looking to purchase a tablet in the near future.  I was looking at purchasing a Surface by Mic...

Yeah, I'm pretty pissed with Acronis.  2012 isn't even over and Acronis True Image 2012 is obsolete if you run Windows 8.  It won't install on Win 8 and this page suggests it will never be updated to do so.  It's pissing me off enormously because I only purchased it 4 - 5 months ago and I've not even gotten 6 months use out of it.  Now it wouldn't be so bad if there were plans to update it, or if it were 10 years old or something, but the year for w...

No, I didn't like it at first, but I've warmed to Windows 8 over the last few months, especially after Stardock's brilliant release of Start8, and now I don't mind using it at all.  In fact, I'm that comfortable with it I'm going to make it my primary OS and run it on my No.1 machine Yup, given that I read AMD's FX series CPU's were designed with Win 8 in mind, I reckon it'll really kick some butt on this 8 core beasty, with 16gb of RAM and 2 Corsair ...

It hadn't occurred to me just how much junk I had collected over the years until I needed to find a couple of parts for the rig I'm building for my mother.  It's like 5 deep plastic storage bins and 3 sets of 4 drawers... all reasonably full.... and I haven't even rounded up what's in the cupboard underneath the stairs, which has a multitude of cases, monitors and other stuff. Anyhow, I thought that I'd start wheedling through it and tossing out some of the old, o...

Damned party poopers, Microsoft has enables blocks to prevent users booting directly to the desktop, thus forcing them to boot into the much disliked Metro UI.  Furthermore, MS has blocked 3rd party start buttons and start menus, thus forcing users to return to Metro frequently to access their apps, etc.  Click here to see full story So, it seems Microsoft is determined to foist Metro upon us, like it or not.  Well I have a message for Microsoft [as do probably many, many other...

Hey folks, if you have Acronis True Image but have not as yet updated to the 2012 version, take a look here to purchase Acronis 2012 and here to view more information about the Plus Pack.  However, DO NOT purchase the Plus Pack via this link.  Purchase Acronis 2012 or upgrade your current version of Acronis True Image via the 1st link, and the Plus Pack is free until July 31st 2012. The Plus pack provides additional options like backing up to PC's that have undergone major hardw...

This.....             arrives at my place Monday. It's the new Thermaltake Chaser Mk 1... see external link for more info. The main reason I'm upgrading my case is to have access to 2 front USB3 ports and an eSata port up front as well.  More importantly, however, is the HDD dock on top, allowing me to plug in any SATA drive [HDD, SSD] without power or USB cables... and I do have several drives without cases, so i...

As the title suggests, Shaunna's desktop PC went guts up and is in dire need of some replacement parts to get it up and running again.  I've ordered the necessary parts and hopefully they'll be here later today so's I can rebuild it for her. Yeah, it has been acting up intermittently for quite a while now, so I wasn't at all surprised that it decided to kark it yesterday.... tho I reckon it was a stubborn bastard for not dying sooner and saving me endless hours of pul...

Okay, so I had a second 500gb Seagate Expansion portable HDD go guts up and I took it back to the point of purchase with the intention of getting a refund.  Yeah, right.  It was a day past the 14 day refund cutoff so I was offered another to replace it instead.  "Not bloody likely," I said: "this is the second one I've brought back that's totally died, so no, I don't want another one." With the refund policy as it was, and the sales clerk not budging, it meant I tha...

I recently had to migrate my OS from one HDD to another due to the old one pretty much dying of old age [was probably close to 6 y/o], and now the drive I migrated to is playing up.  The thing is, this newer drive isn't that old... probably 16 months and just out of warranty, so it is annoying.  A lot of the time I can hear it thrashing and making unhealthy sounds, so I ducked out today and bought myself a 120gb OCZ Vertex 2 to house my main OS, which is Win 7 Home Premium x64. ...

Yeah, so I had to move my OS to another drive and I'm unable to get Impulse to restore my archived apps.  Impulse says it is installing them, then activating them, but moments later the apps return to being available.  I tried creating new archives but no go, and I tried resetting data but that seemed to o nothing as I'm on a clean install with no SD apps.  If anyone has any ideas, a fix for this I muchly appreciate it, though at the end of the day I think I'll have...

I just found this piece and thought it a rather interesting use of Playstation 3 game consoles.  The USAF has literally joined a 1000 or more of them together to create a supercomputer for imaging purposes and problem solving. See the linked article and let us know your thoughts.
