Someplace to stash my stuff
... it seems to be money grabbing, imo

Yeah, I'm pretty pissed with Acronis.  2012 isn't even over and Acronis True Image 2012 is obsolete if you run Windows 8.  It won't install on Win 8 and this page suggests it will never be updated to do so.  It's pissing me off enormously because I only purchased it 4 - 5 months ago and I've not even gotten 6 months use out of it.

Now it wouldn't be so bad if there were plans to update it, or if it were 10 years old or something, but the year for which it was published isn't even over... and it is already obsolete for 1000's of Windows 8 users?  Moreover, a number of people who added Win 8 compatibility to the Acronis 2012 wishlist were totally ignored, so I'm thinking Acronis has an attitude problem and will likely disappear from the list of backup programs as I search for a replacement to safeguard my system.  Active Disk Image and Macrium look like 2 possible candidates.

Oh yeah, and another reason I'm looking to switch, Acronis bundles what should be standard features [by today's standards] into a 'Plus Pack' and charges extra for them.  Various forum members drew attenton to this and noted that other developers had made them all inclusive, but it seems Acronis intends not to follow suit, and for me that is an incentive to look elsewhere.

every major store is offering machines with Win 8 preinstalled, and nothing else.... like no Win 7 of any flavour.

Gee, I wonder what major software company may have had a hand in that marketing strategy?

Mark, I think the world of ya mate, but you gotta lay off smoking that cabbage.

I don't freakin' smoke tha stuff... clogs up the lungs worse than tobacco, which I no longer smoke... nearly 3 years now.  However, I do occasionally smoke after intercourse...

.... which according to IROKONESS, means I'm doing it too fast.

Back to the OP. even if the upgrade is cheap, you'll be back in the same sinking boat with the next OS. ( Which some will be quick to adopt, I am sure and just as quick in complaining about incompatibilities) Why bother? Just move on and chalk it up to a lesson learned.[/quote

I'm not too sure I'll go with even a cheap upgrade at this point.  I'm playing around with Win 8's backup utility at the moment  and have found it to do the job as required.  It doesn't have all the flowery extras found in Acronis, some of which I found useful, but I'm thinking it does the basic job of backing up well enough to not part with any more cash. I still have 4 days to decide with the Acronis 19.99 offer.  Thing is, I'm tight as a fishes arse when it comes to money, so we'll see.

[quote who="Wizard1956" reply="23" id="3283517"]P.S. There are tens of thousands of Windows 7 machines still for sale. You didn't think they all got scrapped or sent back to have Whine8 installed didja?

Um, not here! As stated earlier, the major stores here in Oz are offering only Win 8 machines now. A neighbour told me she recently went to Harvey Norman [one of those major stores] to buy a Win 7 machine but was told she could ONLY purchase a Win 8 machine AND a Win 7 installation disc to self-install if that's what she wanted.  She got a similar story at OfficeWorks, so took my advice and went to my regular PC guy to get a custom built Win 7 rig there.  It's sad but true, when new PC tech hits the shelves here in Oz, the old [if you can call it that] disappears pretty quickly.... and most large retailers won't order it in for you.   Some of the smaller independents may keep/carry some of the older stuff, but the trouble with that is hunting around for what you need, especially when a lot aren't online [believe it or not] and are often too busy to talk on the phone.

Oh the irony of WinCustomize...

I wouldn't have seen that, being a current subscriber... but I may have gone ballistic, had I seen it.

Hmmm, let me guess... wouldn't be that Microsuff wot Uvah keeps talking about, would it?

Probably, and because we never went into recession and the economy is strong, Microstuff figures we're up for that marketing strategy.

Bastards!!!!  First they make a new OS that's compatible with eff all, and now they're pulling all the good shit off the shelves.... BASTARDS!!!!!

Oh, and if anybody's wondering why it has taken me so long to respond here, Shaunna is sick and I've been up and down to her all night, so yeah, some time elapsed between posts.  I think it's one of those 24 hour bugs because she has been feeling a little better over the last hour or so.  Well here's hoping that's all it is.

Anyway, she's sleeping comfortably now and that's what I'll be doing shortly... need to finish my cuppa [tea] first.

on Nov 24, 2012

Please give her my best wishes for a speedy recovery, Mark.   [no pun intended].

Give Shaunna my best Mark. Hope she feels better.

Thing is, I'm tight as a fishes arse when it comes to money, so we'll see.

I prefer the term "fiscally sensible"

I figured that was a big piece of the frustration, just wasn't going to say it, I'm the same way.  That and I think we've talked about how annoying it is to buy stuff to literally just flush down the toilet.

Nope, not a big fan of o/s upgrades.

Hope the sick one feels better soon.

A quick Google...

"The official release date for True Image 2013 by Acronis is August 27, 2012 (for English..."

Having a '12' in the name in a year with '12' doesn't make something 'current'.

Another quick google...

"The official release date for Acronis True Image Home 2012 is August 23, 2011."

Get well soon, Shaunna...

on Nov 24, 2012

Okay, so mrs s is feelin somewhat better today and is on the mend... thanks to all for the well wishes.  Thing is, now I'm feeling like crap. It's probably that I've had no sleep whatsover and I'm running on empty, as I'm not suffering the nausea and stuff that befell Shaunna yesterday... touch wood.

So much for going to bed, eh!  Not long after saying I would, my mother rang, saying that she and my sister were coming to visit, It would have been rude to have just gone to bed, so I spruced myself up a bit and hung in there.  Besides, mother is off to the UK again and I wanted to catch up before she leaves on Wednesday.

There seems little point of going to bed now [1.56pm].  Hmmm, I may as well see if I can hang on 'til this evening to hopefully get back into a regular sleep pattern.  I've been out of kilter in that regard for the past few weeks and would love to have a decent night's sleep again.

Anyway, back to the topic of backup software and what I've done thus far.  Well I installed Macrium Reflect [free version] and found it quite capable and easy enough to use, and while it has a few more features than the built in solution in Win 8, it is lacking a few I'm accustomed to using.  However, it is more than adequate for my backup needs... as is the built-in solution in Win 8.

As for Redo Backup and Recovery, well it is also easy enough to use and quite adequate for my needs.... decisions, decisions.  Thing is, with Redo being disc based, I could actually use both without bloating my Windows installation, but would it be overkill with Win 8's backup utility as well?  Then there's biting the bullet and spending the 20 bucks to get a full featured solution with Acronis' 2013 upgrade.

Hmmm, decisions, decisions!  C'mon people, WTF do I go with... and no, the 20 bucks for Acronis 2013 isn't out of the question.

thanks

Doc, Uvah, and jafo, while i feel a little better, i feel weak but i am on the mend i have kept cups of tea and some foods down so far even if only in small amounts .

lol  I'm sure there's a prescription to aid with that somehow.

And so glad your feeling better mrs_starkers. So far I have missed a few doozies. Knock on wood.

on Nov 25, 2012

A quick Google...

Jafo, while others just stuck the knife between my ribs, you just had to twist it, didn't you... not once but thrice.

I was briefly thinking of using that oft used Oz term of endearment to express my hurt, but then I figured "bastard" might be a bit strong... and I do want to be able to log in tomorrow.

It's like when I asked the cop if he'd arrest me for calling him a dirty rotten bastard, and he said yes.  I then asked him if he'd arrest me for thinking it.  He said that he couldn't arrest me for thinking it, so I said: "Well in that case, then,  I think you're a dirty rotten bastard."

Seriously, though, I'm not really that perturbed by Acronis' decision not to update 2012 for Win 8, and 20 bucks won't exactly break the piggy bank.  Besides, being that mine wasn't a multi machine license, and my Win 7 machine for upstairs needs a backup solution, I was up for a new copy/license anyway.

Thing is, knowing many folk around here as well as I do, I knew if I baited the hook I'd get several bites and acquire some useful information [like the $19.99 upgrade as opposed to a $29.99 upgrade] while creating a thread to break the silence and/or monotony that breaks out here every once in a while.

Yup, I'm sassy bastard, aren't I... but it's all good, and other folks are now aware of the situation when updating to Win 8, etc.

Yeah, as if I could build enough momentum with my bad back and other arthritic issues... but it sorta sounded good at the time.

Which reminds me of the time I was at the front door answering a survey for one of those womens mags obsessed with such matters.  The woman asked if I smoked after intercourse, and I responded: "To be quite honest, I've never looked!"

Then there was the 2 spinsters on their way to a desperate and dateless ball.  As they were walking past the tannery [where they turn hides into leather] one sniffed and asked if she could smell burning hair. The other sniffed and asked if perhaps they were walking a bit too fast.
