Someplace to stash my stuff
all of a sudden it thinks it's Jan 2088.

Yeah, I was in XP on my dual boot machine doing some recording from a couple of old LP's, and when I tried rebooting into Vista again it was no go, wouldn't start. All I got was the boot screen for several minutes, so I did a forced shutdown and unplugged the power to reset everything. Vista restarted but several apps were acting up....Windowblinds wouldn't load and Winstep Xtreme was saying my subscription was prematurely up. Uhhhh!!!!

First thing I tried was uninstalling and reinstalling Windowblinds, but no go there, and the Winstep reminder popped up again after rebooting. What the F#*k's going on here, I thought ....and then, for some strange reason, I checked the time and date. What I saw really freaked me out....it was saying that it was January 7 2088, like 81 years from now.

Now I've booted in and out of both OSes before without issue, and there's been no hardware or software changes, so what the heck would cause my puter to suddenly gain 81 years between reboots??? I have a theory or three, but I don't want to publicly announce a conspiracy, so I'll take any reasonable ideas/theories that may help to explain it.

BIOS battery failing or loose.
Reseat it, reset it (the BIOS clock), buy a spare, and wait for the next failure.

Huh!!! Well that's not very exciting, is it!! A loose or failing battery....couldn't come up with something a bit more mysterious/dramatic/totally strange, eh? I was really hoping for something more along those lines...you know, the stuff The Twighlight Zone is made of. Whatever happened to the good ol' conspiracy/tinfoil hat stuff these forums have (on occasion) been famous/notorious for??

Actually, I will check out the BOIS battery idea, but I dunno know it'll be that cos me pooter wos in tha shop real recent fer a new hard-drive & health check, and everything were ship-shape n' Bristol fashion then.

I didn't say HOW the battery got loose or started to fail, did I?

It is unlikely that the battery would or could be tested.

Orright, so wot d'yer reckon it coulda bin....sneaky lil alien critters transferring thru the internet and entering my pooter via the ethernet cable to wreak havoc on the mobo components??

Oh, okay!! So does that mean ordinary pooter shops ain't gonna detect if it's on tha flamin' blink....and would Stardock have some new fangled technology that'd be able to test BOIS batteries, then??

Come to think of it, could've been Stardock wot done it, sendin' me puter into the future, that is....being there wos some time warp thing going on with comments on WC personal pages a while back.

was it the rubber glove/bend over & cough test.........?

Dunno, but that's a possibility...the short sharp shock sent it into convulsions, and the result was temporary confusion regarding time and space.

Oh well, I'm still none the wiser, not that there's anything unusual about that.
