Hi folks, it's time to talk about beer and the thousands upon thousands of different brands and styles on offer.  Steve and I have been experimenting with various imported beers and we're quite delighted with our findings.  In no particular order, here's a list of our favourites from those we tried:

Molson Canadian lager..... a very, very nice drop that's brimming with the flavour of hops and prairie barley.

Asahi.... a very nice Japanese lager... a smooth and refreshing beer that's easy on the palette.

Heinekin lager.... I mean, what more can I say, it is probably the best beer from Holland.  It too is crisp, clean and refreshing.

Corona lager.... another refreshing beer with just a hint of sweetness and full bodied flavour.

Peroni lager.... a crisp and refreshing beer from Italy with a hint of lemon and a bitterness that satisfies the palette.

Oettinger pilsner.... a really great German beer that's flavoursome and brewed to please.

Stella Artois. pilsner.... a nice brew from Belgium that too is crisp, refreshing and wholesome.

Kilkenny ale..... other than Guinness, it is probably the most popular beer from Ireland, with a full-bodied, rich flavour that's bound to please those who love a rich tasting beer.

Hollandia lager..... another great Dutch beer that's similar to Heiniken but still has an identity and flavour of its own.

Carlsberg green lager.... with its clean, crisp taste and a satisfying depth of flavour, Carlsberg is full-bodied with a rich golden colour.

Sol lager.... another Mexican beer with great taste and compliments spicy foods.

Sapporo premium beer.... is brewed under license here in Australia from a Japanese recipe and has a nice malt flavour.

Grolsch lager.... again from Holland and another crisp, clean beer with a nice malt, hoppy taste.  It also comes in an ornamental flip-top bottle that would go great in a man cave to decorate it in style.

Adnams Ghost Ship pale ale..... a full bodied beer with a hint of sweetness that would likely appeal to those who like a little sweetness in their day.

Becks lager.... a German beer that's a favourite all around the world for its crisp, clean taste.

Coors lager..... a truly refreshing beer that's brewed in the Rockies from a Belgian recipe.... highly recommended.

Kronenbourg 1664 lager..... brewed in Australia under license but is available around the world.  Again, a very refreshing beer with a hint of lemon.

Estrella lager.... brewed in Spain with a full hops flavour that's nice and easy to drink.

Lowenbrau lager.... meaning 'lion's brew', is fully balanced with a dry but crisp, bitter undertone.

Steinlager..... brewed in New Zealand and quite the drop for those who appreciate a fine beer with great body.

Tun draught (red) bitter (green).... brewed in Belgium and bother are full-flavoured and inexpensive.

Tetleys smooth ale.... a British beer that just goes down a treat, especially in the Summer months and after a hard day's work.

Tennents lager.... also brewed in the UK from German hops, Scottish malted barley and the pristine waters of the Scottish Highlands.

Erdinger wheat beer.... a really smooth beer brewed in Germany from the finest ingredients and waqters from Bavaria.

Tuborg Danish lager..... a refreshing bottom fermented beer with a medium rich to bitter taste.

Old Fart ale..... brewed in the UK to celebrate cantankerous old boozers like myself who love a truly full-flavoured rich ale.

Mont-Blanc Blond ale..... brewed in the French alps from all natural ingredients to provide a sweet but bitter taste.

Martens pilsner....a classic European style Pilsener. Its crisp, full bodied taste has a distinctive hop character yet remaining refreshingly drinkable.

Ahornberger ale..... a well balanced brew with a rich full-bodied flavour yet is so refreshing to drink.

Boddingtons Pub Ale.... a draught beer with a thick head and a beaut flavour that's just so drinkable.

There are others I may mention later, but now I'm interested in which beers are favourites with WC members and other Stardockians.  Please add a few more great beers to savour.

There's a pub in Werribee that has 180 beers...either on tap or in bottle.

I went to a pub in London in '69 that claimed to have the most on-tap beers in the world.... it had 3 separate bars to accommodate them all.

When this lock-down is over I'll try to get back there.

Yeah, I keep seeing in the news that Vic is really battling Covid-19.  Thing is, there are too many inconsiderate and selfish bastards who refuse to behave in accordance with the restrictions, those who are putting others at risk.  What they are not realising is that the restrictions will go on longer and get tougher if they keep flouting the laws put in place to protect people.

A friend of ours up in Queensland was telling us that a Melbourne man drove all the way up through NSW and was stopped 3 times at the Qld border, fined $1600 twice and was turned around 3 times.  Not listening, he parked his car someplace and tried walking across about a km into a NSW farmer's property to try crossing again.  The farmer wasn't having any of that, made a citizens arrest and handed him over to police.  He's now facing some serious jail time for repeated breaches in the 3 states.

Anyhow, not that we're in lockdown here, but I'm quite happy staying at home and don't miss getting out and about or socialising.  So long as we have plenty of food, our medications and lots 'n lots o' beer, I'm not fussed if I get out or not.... these days it's just the doctor's, the chemist, the supermarket and the bottle-o when necessary.

Well today has been a bit of a mixture and very soon I'm going to have a grandpa nap to recuperate from a rough night of coughing and not being able to sleep much.

Anyhow, att. Jafo, we started out with Coopers Sparkling Ale, and what a nice drop it is, too.  Some people may get put off the slightly cloudy appearance, but I hope that doesn't put anyone off giving this great beer a try.  It has a crisp sparkling texture with a nice hop/malt flavour.  It comes in at 4.8 alc vol and is very pleasant to drink.

We had a couple of those each and switched to some Aktein Landbier 1857 Helles.  After a couple of those we switched to Molson Canadian Lager and finished with some Shambles Summer Ale.  I have about half a glass left and then I'm going for a sleepies.

The original and best Budweiser! (unpopular opinion, but hey)

on Jul 25, 2020

Don't know why the original Budweiser would be an unpopular choice, it is in fact quite a decent beer, not that I've had one in a while.  I've seen it at Dan Murphys but went with other choices at the time.  However, I shall purchase a slab [case of 24] next time I'm in-store.

For many Americans there is only one Bud is why....lol. Anheuser Busch even has an ongoing suit against the Czech company for the name.

Also i believe Anheuser Busch is German as well. Love the labeling though.

In South Oz they'll ask you if you want it 'rolled' [mixed] or else it's decanted into a glass.  I drink it straight from the Stubby ....so it's getting an equivelent of 'rolled' anyway.

Coopers without the sediment is like Mezcal without the worm...

Quoting starkers,

That's typical: the Yanks suing the original holder of a name to own and use it themselves.  I recall a family bakery I used to visit in Ipswich Queensland being sued by MacDonalds for the name it had been known by since the 1850's.  As was often the case, big money and the system stacked in their favour, MacDonalds won that case and forced the bakery to discontinue using its own family name.

Yeah, it is best with the sediment, but so many drinkers will not touch it because of the sediment.  I used to brew my own, Coopers Draught, and most of my mates wouldn't touch it because there was a little sediment in it.  Oh well, all the more there was for me.  I don't brew my own these days cos it's so time consuming, sterilising and preparing the bottles for filling.  I used to have 3 x 60 litre fermenters so I used to get quite a lot of back aches back then, so these days I am quite happy to leave it the the breweries and sample their wares.

They lost with Ugg boots.  The Oz Govt simply ignored the idiots who had tried it on.  The utter gall of trying to wipe out the original Aussie product and replace it with a cheap Chinese knock-off.

What I thought was sheer gall is MacDonalds suing a family bakery for exclusive rights to its name.  I mean, the bakery was established in the 1850's, decades upon decades before the fast food giant was even thought of.  The shit thing is that MacDonalds won the case after they had it adjourned umpteen dozen times so the family finally ran out of money and could no longer afford to contest it.

It's not something they should have had to do.... to give up their birthright to a jumped up, Johnny-come-lately Yank company.  Moreover, it was my favourite bakery for all sorts of pastries and bread products, so yeah, I am annoyed that in the end they were forced to close with all their capital bled dry by US greed.

Right!!!! Now I'm going to before I say anything more to upset anyone.

Yesterday saw a change in our quest to sample as many imported beers as we can and we tried Bintang, a Pilsner from Indonesia.  To be quite honest, I did not think Indonesia brewed much in the way of beer, but I was pleasantly surprised with this beer.  It has a nice rich hop and barley flavour with a sweetish after-taste.  Yup, it's one that I'd recommend.

Another 'yesterday' post:  We had some Becks and it went down a treat.... as always.  I [we] hadn't had it in a while - a couple of years at least - more likely 3 or 4 - so it was almost an experimentation of something we'd not had before.

Today we have a delivery of 2 cases of Carlsberg Pilsner arriving.  I've had the Carlsberg Lager before and quite liked it, but the Pilsner will be another tester for us.

Anyhow, folks, I off back to bed.  I woke up really thirsty at 4.00 am and needed to get a drink [not beer but a nice cup of tea] and thought I'd check WC out while I'm drinking it.

Most Pilsner beer has a heartier taste. You will enjoy it.

Back in the day 40 50 years ago the only beer on tap in Victoria, Australia was Carlton Draught a product of Carlton and United Breweries. Every Friday night after work we would walk over the road to the hotel and indulge in beer and snacks. We would then drive home a little bit tipsy. There was no breath tests back then. In the years that followed Carlton and United added Victoria Bitter and Fosters Lager to their beer on tap. One of my favorite bottled beers back then was Crown Lager.

I can still remember the hotel owner weighing the kegs of beer as they were offloaded from the delivery truck.

They were the good old days!

No doubt I will, given my liking for Pilsners.  I have a few on my to-do list but many are unavailable due to the damned Corona Virus affecting deliveries from Europe, where most pilsners originated.  Oh well, in the meantime there's hundreds of international beers still available here in Oz

I recall Queensland back in the early 70's mostly had just two main beers on tap ....XXXX and Carlton Draught.  In some pubs you could get Carlton's Pilsner on tap, and in some Central Queensland pubs you could get Eumundi Lager on tap ... and further North you could get Cairns Draught on tap.

In the late 70's early 80's the former head chemist at the XXXX opened the Powers brewery at Yatala Qld and began brewing Powers Bitter; Powers Gold, a mid-strength beer; and Powers Ice.  I used to drink the Powers Bitter back in the day, but I havent seen it in years, not since CUB bought Powers out.  Nowadays I only see Powers Gold, and frankly, if I wanted diluted beer I'd add my own water.

There was a time not so long ago that I'd add a splash of lemonade to my beers, but not any more... these days it's straight up and down the hatch.  Oh yeah, I quite like Crown Lager as well, though I've not seen it on tap anywhere.  As for VB and Fosters, I wouldn't put 'em in my mouth.  Apart from a couple of fruity beers, Fosters is the worst beer I ever tried.  Don't think it liked me, either.... used to upset my gut and I'd be running to the dunny next day.
