Someplace to stash my stuff
from left-over old parts.
Published on February 12, 2009 By starkers In Personal Computing

I've recently been builing my daughter a PC from old parts left over from various upgrades over the years and what a pain it has been... from beginning to end.

First off, the 450 watt generic PSU wasn't up for the job and it wouldn't fire up properly/stay fired up, so it had to be replaced.

With money being a bit tight these days that took a while, but once it was installed we were back in business... for a very short while.  Yup, everything appeared to be working as it should, but XP kept going to a BSOD part way into the install, suggesting a hardware issue as no other software was installed.  Grrrr, I then have to remove all the likely culprits one by one to eliminate the cause... no go, XP still BSOD's after the 'network' -' time' - 'locale' setup pages. Hmmm, maybe the BIOS date settings are wrong?

Nope, wasn't that either!  Having eliminated that, the graphics card, RAM and soundcard I get to thinking it may be the HDD, given it wasn't so young any more, so I pop it into my spare rig and test it there... works fine and XP installs beyond the previous BSOD.  Right, So I put it back into the rig I'm building but still there's an issue and now XP nor the BIOS isn't seeing the drive at all... in fact it isn't seeing the ROM drive or the other (smaller) HDD, either.  WTF?  So in goes the mobo disc and I reset to factory default settings, which seems to resolve the issue and we're back in business again... or so I thought.

Now this is just a standard issue of XP Home Edition and it should just install without the need of additional files... but no.  The installation got as far as 'Installing Updates' and now it's asking for an 'aws' file that's part of SP1.  WTF, again.  That can't be right, so I try to start the installation from scratch, but that's no go, either.  The rig wouldn't allow me to boot from disc and kept going back to the interrupted installation, which I had already concluded wasn't going anywhere without the SP1 file...

OK, I'll fix this sucker and download SP1 and burn it to CD.  Yeah, right!  Back to the drawing board... and into the BIOS to check everything is AOK.  No wonder I couldn't boot from disc, the BIOS wasn't seeing the CD ROM ... again.  Apparently the 'old' plug wasn't seating properly, so a new one fixed that and again I'm back in business... XP installs without an issue.

Could have saved myself a whole lot of time if only I had known about ActiveKillDisk before I started... would have wiped the HDD completely clean, including the old 'boot sector which contained a previous installation of XP with SP1, hence the asking of the 'aws' file.

By now I'm mightily frustrated and pissed. I've spent several hours getting this rig up and running... and now I have to contend with 'naked' XP while I perform all the updates and install the service packs etc.  YUK, the Fisher Price blue of XP is totally disgusting after using WindowBlinds for so long to change it... and it's not exactly a short process to download and install umpteen dozen updates and patches to a bare-bones XP, so I was sure gonna have nightmares in Fisher Price technicolor.

Sure, I could have installed a trial version of WB to ease my pain, but my daughter doesn't see the point and she can't be educated if it's gonna cost her money she doesn't have/can not spare.  In summary, then, the building of this rig was a right royal pain in the arse, and getting XP to install was a trial in itself... but having to sit though a couple of hours of a Fisher Price UI while the updates were downloading/installing was torture.  The main thing is that my daughter has a functioning PC and it hasn't cost her anything, which is a blessing when she has two young-uns who are growing out of the clothes faster than she can replace them.

I never ever had this kind of trouble when building with brand new parts, and I may very well say "never again", but I have enough spare parts to build another 3 rigs... 3 copies of XP *shudder* to go with them... and a son who still doesn't have his own PC, just a shared laptop he can hardly get on because of the missus and 2 kids... yup, homework, etc.   So yeah, I will do it again... though I probably will wear my rose coloured glasses to numb the effects of 'naked' XP next time around.

Oh, did I mention that having to work with 'naked' XP was the worst part of this ordeal.

... maybe I could get into it [oneday..] long enough to get what I want before the big freeze!

What d'ya mean..."big freeze"?  It be Summer m' dear girl.. and a friggin'one at that.  However, my advice to you is get stuck into it before Winter arrives cos I reckon it'll be a cold one... cold enough to feeze the balls off a billiard table.

Oddly enough, it's always the software that gets me.

Yeah, it's always the software that gets me... it doesn't always behave logically, well not logically as we mere humans think it should.

Well how I think it should.

Yep, software is the worst. I lost 2 weeks to an upside down PCI cable though... utterly disabled my system until a buddy who knew better was able to make it over and enlighten me. My own stupidity there.

I know all about the stupidity factor, only too well.  When I was eliminating bits of hardware as the cause of the BSOD's, I'd unplug the tower from the power supply, do what I had to, and plug it it again, but on one occasion the damned thing wouldn't fire up again.  WTF, I thought, and proceeded to check everything but the cause.  The previous PSU did not have a on/off switch like the new one, so I didn't think (very late at night... and not having intentionally switched it off in the first place) to switch it back on again.  No, I was checking the mobo connections, the HDD connection, the CPU connection... everything but what should have been obvious.  What a dickhead.

Rant??   Rant???   It's not a rant!  It's a documented experience, I'll have you know... and oddly enough, in between the problems and profuse cussing at times, I actually enjoyed myself.  It's a bit like the old saying: "What don't kill you only makes you stronger."  It didn't defeat me so I've learned something valuable through my success.

Ok ok, I'll fix it.

This rant DOCUMENTED EXPERIENCE sounds like nothing other than the average day for me. Oddly enough I *like* it.

There...

And good to know I'm not entirely alone in my morbid enjoyment of computer trouble. (Though I only enjoy the trouble that I manage to solve, I hate when I can't solve an issue for some reason... which mostly tend to be a matter of economy)

Hehe, that fixed it orright... and you have such a way with words.

Yeah, I get a tremendous sense of satisfaction when I solve problematic issues all by my lonesome... and while things aren't going so well, the frequent expletives do help a lot.

LOL starkers, I meant the big freeze as in, my P1's drive .. that was the final nail in it's coffin, the drive had physical damage, and would freeze after 10 minutes

Sorry to hear the troubles, Cap'n. I knew you weren't having fun, but I didn't know it was that bad!

Having to deal with fixing Anne's computer woes (she uses "regular" XP...and not much skill with it) is torture...I agree.

Getting back to my laptop with my SD software feels so good after that, I can't even begin to say.

Well, here's  to ya....for being the good guy who tried to help!

Situation: I'm excited I finally got the SATA HD installed after waiting for the power cable to come in the mail. I'm now trying to install Windows XP SP1. During the process, XP asks me for SATA drivers on a 3.5" floppy disk.

Problem: I don't have a 3.5" floppy drive.

That's where the aforementioned slipstreaming comes in. Both my desktop and my laptop I've done that way, with no floppies at all. Though granted I did try an external floppy on the laptop at first to save the extra trouble, but all that did was crash setup, lol.

Unfortunately, in his haste to build a computer for his daughter, he completely forgot to add the replicator and cookie dispensor...

By the way, the software always acts logically. It is programed to. You just do not understand it's logic.

Besides, you'd need an entire web page dedicated purely to your cock-ups.

Nah, it wasn't that bad... frustrating at times, yes... but the end result was/is a working PC. So all is well that ends well, as they say.... and did I mention that the frequent expletives helped immensely.

Ah, so that explains the black SUV out front with the moosehead on thre bullbar... but WTF it the WTF... the World Tossers Federation?  Dunno why they'd be watching me, I let my membership lapse when I gave up tossing a few years back... and I've moved since then.

And what's this bit: "all the abuse of late"??  Those were fair and deserved comments... and they were backed up by Wikipedia, so not only were they fair and deserved, they were factual.

Wanker's Trophy Foundation.  They've been looking for you for years to give you your trophy.  Besides, someone turned you in for tossing a salad.   Sarah could probably see you from Alaska.

Yeah, fool me... but I did remember the crumpet warmer and coffee dispenser... and the USB rocket launcher.

By the way, the software always acts logically. It is programed to. You just do not understand it's logic.

Software may always act logically, but it was all programmed by humans, and that sometimes is where the illogical comes in.  For example, I had an image editing app once (can't remember what it was called because it was a POS and I ditched it) that wouldn't save images in the normal manner... it was all ass backwards and very frustrating.  Instead of right clicking or going to 'File' to save an image 'as', you had to select all the parameters and details first, then navigate to the image file to save it... and quite often it would error out because the image 'so-say' was an unrecognised format and did not meet the selected requirements.  Like it couldn't save as a 1024 x 768 jpeg when it imported it as one?  The blurb said that it worked with and saved all popular image formats, but the missus and I could never get it to save one, just 'tifs' and

Admittedly, most software behaves as one would expect, but on the odd occasion one will strike an app that does things the other way around for some strange reason, and that's where the confusion comes in.  As for me not understanding its logic, tell me something I didn't already know... fortunately for me, most of the software I use is near idiot proof.

Ah, so, I've finally won something!  Now that's I trophy I'd mount on the mantlepiece with pride and caringly polish every day.

Besides, someone turned you in for tossing a salad.

The dirty rotten scoundrel... wait 'til I get my hands....   On second thought, being he's a paid up member of the World Tossers Federation he might actually like/welcome that.  Maybe getting the board of directors to 'toss' him out on his ear would be more appropriate.

. . . and this is why Windows 7 is very high on my wish list once it's released. I'll get a temp job over the summer if I have to.

After installing Windows 7 beta and seeing how incredibly smooth and fast the install is and how it fixes everything in Vista - there's no way I'm going back to XP after 7 is out.

Not that I'm using XP anyways - I'm using Vista. But I understand why people don't like Vista.
