Someplace to stash my stuff
before I go out of my cotton pickin' mind... yeah, I know.

I have a X-Craft Cooler Master external HDD case and just replaced a 250gig drive with a 500gig IDE Western Digital WD5000AAKB Caviar SE16 in it (formatted and pertitioned into two equal segments), but I have a problem in that neither of my OSes (Vista and XP Pro) recognises it anymore.... same case, USB cable and port, yet it does not show up in Disk Management/My Computer as before.

I tried uninstalling in Device Manager, reinstalling using different USB leads in different ports but still no go... USB Mass Storage is enabled in the BIOS, so I'm wondering if I somehow need to instruct Windows to recognise drives larger than 250gig, which was the largest prior to swapping to the 500gig. Can't think of anything else because that's the only thing that's changed.

CPU.... AMD64 x2 Athlon 6400 Black Edition

Mobo... Gigabyte GA-MA770-DS3. (all USB ports USB2

RAM... 4 GB DDR2 800 Corsair.

OS... Dual boot XP Pro SP 3/Vista Ultimate SP1.

Need to get this thing enable/recognised as I need to get backups done, so any help advice would be greatly appreciated.

TIA... starkers

I don't think so, Matey............

Ahem... like um, it wasn't fixed 'til this morning, Oz time.  Ah, but that's it!   You're in the US and I'm here in Oz - 14 hours ahead of you - and it takes another (almost) half rotation of the Earth for the fix to take effect.

Anyhow, folks, the problem has been resolved and yrag was right, it just didn't take effect immediately because sometimes it takes a couple of cold-starts, and it seems Nero BackItUp 4 was also causing a conflict.

Alls well that ends well, though, I've disabled Nero BackItUp at startup and will start it manually when needed, so I should be right with it from here (fingers crossed)

Again, thanks to everyone who offered advice/suggestions, I'm grateful.

Glad you got it resolved.
