Yrag, Anyone....Assistance Needed With Windows Update.

Hadn't been into XP for a while on my Vista dual boot, so thought I'd go in and update everything, etc. All began well enough, Windows Upadates downloaded OK, but they just refuse to install no matter what I do. Even a repair install of XP (Pro SP2) did not resolve the issue.

Event Viewer shows these error reports:

Event ID: 1001... Fault Bucket 00733296.

Event ID: 1000... Fault Application drwtsn 32exe. version 5. 1.200.0 faulting module dgbhelp.dll version 2600.2180 fault address 0x0001295 d.

Event ID: 1001... Fault Bucket 01704331.

Event ID: 1000... Faulting Apllication Explorer.exe. version 60.2900.2180, faulting module user32 dll. version5.1 2600.2180, fault address 0x0000ee3c.

Also these warnings....

Event ID: 1015... Failed to connect to server. Error 0x8007043C.

Event ID: 1517... Windows saved user Home ***** registry while an application or sevice was using the registry during logoff. The memory used by the user's registry has not been freed. The memory will be unloaded when it is no longer in use.

These are the only error references I can find, so hope they help find & resolve the problem.

THE (little) Prog (without installation process (just put it in a folder and run it) is "Dial-a-fix" it will repair for sure any trouble you may get with Windows Update (and some others ...)

Seems to me I've been played at my own game... the pirate's thread has been pirated.

Anyhow, back to the issue at hand... damned blasted effing computers... grrrrr!!

Not only can I not install the downloaded Windows updates, now I've lost the internet on XP as well... something to do with "cannot resolve my IP address" after I inadvertently did something or other.... or in other words, effed it up.

In answer to the account type and security apps: there is only one user account, mine, and the standard Administrator acct. The only security apps currently running/installed are Avast Anti-virus Home Edition, Ad Aware 2007, and PC Tools firewall. However, I shall go back into XP later, put on my Administrator's hat so XP knows I'm boss, and disable them to see if they may be preventing installation.

1. you have a dual boot machine for vista and xp - which OS did you install first?

Originally it was XP then Vista, but I recently performed a clean install of XP to clean it up and resolve a bit of sluggishness, etc.

2. are the two OS's installed on a different hard drive?

Yes, I have XP on 250gig IDE drive, and Vista on a 250gig SATA drive.

3. why is it that these updates are not installed from the past?

They were but the rewrite required re-installation of them all... thing is, the first few, to set up Windows Installer, etc, installed without issue. It was only after the required reboot that problems arose.

4. could you give us a break down of the hardware in use?

PC...home/custom build:
Gigabyte S Series GA-MA770-DS3;
AMD64 Athlonx2: 6400+ Black Edition CPU;
4ghz of Corsair DDR2 800 RAM;
HDD 0: Seagate IDE 250gig... 3 partitions C: XP... and 2 storage drives.
HDD 1: Seagate Sata 250gig...3 partitions E: Vista and 2 storage drives.
HDD 2: Samsung Sata 200gig...2 paritions for music/media files.
HDD 3: Western Digital 160gig... 1 partition for internal files backup
HDD 4: External Seagate 250gig... 2 partitions for external OS backups

The new XP backup had not yet completed so was of no help here... *slaps self around jowls for allowing real life to interfere with completing XP backup a lot sooner*

Anyhow, best I get my nose back to the grindstone and see if I can't fix this XP beast.

Anyhow, all the updates that had previously been downloaded to my PC installed when I shut down in the wee hours of the Oz morn... so now I'm all up to date and protected. Hehe, it's sorta like a software condom, of sorts.
