Someplace to stash my stuff
but only just

Well my CoolerMaster Cosmos II, ASUS Maximus VII Hero mobo and CPU cooler have arrived... at long fechen last.

Oops, I did say rant off, didn't I?   Still, I waited long enough... and maybe there's a little residual frustration lingering.

Anyway, I unpacked the Cosmos II.... and what a beastie it is, too!  I thought the Thermaltake Level 10 was a beastie, but this beastie beats that beastie by quite a bit.  It's fechen huge!  Put it this way, and not forgetting I'm not a short arse, it almost comes up to where my dangly bits leave off.... like if I were just tuppence ha'penny shorter it'd be past there and up to my hips.

According to the specs it is 13.5" wide x 27.7" high x 26.1" deep, but it sure looks and feels bigger in the flesh.

So yeah, the Cosmos II is impressive and a fine looking tower and would do any PC build proud.   There is oodles of room inside - like it's massive - to accommodate even the largest of motherboards and graphics cards.  It has bays for 13 HDDs, 2 are front loading and hot swappable, and space for 3 optical drives.  Cable management is going to be a breeze with all the rubber grommeted cut-outs, built-in retainers and all the packed accessories, which includes PSU cable extensions, given the bottom loading PSU and just how large the case is.

Oh, and did I mention just how damned good looking this case is?  No?  Well it's bloody well handsome and quite elegant, to say the least... not to mention aesthetically pleasing, beautifully crafted and designed... captivating.  Okay, so I'm laying it on a bit thick, but I'm so ecstatically pleased and near jumping out of my skin with anticipation over the build.  Yeah, this case was proving somewhat difficult to get, and I waited some time to get it, like just on a month, but I'm so glad that I waited it out for it instead of compromising with a lesser case that was in stock.  There were some nice looking alternatives available, but none compare to this beastie... not in looks, size or practicality.

Now this case was originally purchased - no, it didn't fall off the back of a truck - for a completely new build similar to Jafo's, but a health related priority came up to delay that at least 12 months, so I'm going to rebuild by current main rig in the Cosmos II and reassess in a year or so.

So, this beastie will have in it:

CPU: Intel Core i7 4790 K @ 4.0ghz.

Cooling: DeepCool 240L [twin fan] liquid cooler

Mobo: ASUS Maximus VII Hero... comes with Assassins Creed Unity.

RAM: 32gb G-Skill DDR3 RipjawsZ 2133gz.

GPU: ASUS Mars GTX760x2 4gb DDR5 x512 bit.

PSU: Silverstone 1200w Gold.

Sound: Creative Sound Blaster ZXR,

Optical: LG BluRay BH16NS40

OS Drive: Samsung 250gb M.2 SSD;

2nd SSD: 512gb Samsung Evo 250.

HDDs: 12 x Western Digital 3tb Caviar Green.

There will be a few other things, like PCIe cards for additional USB3 and SATA3 connections, etc, but that's all the main stuff for now.  Yes, there's better out there, what with all the new PC tech available since I purchased this hardware, but this machine will be no slouch and it'll do me for some time to come.

Anyway, I have to go to the post office to pick up a parcel and I'll begin work on it when I get back... pics will be posted along the way.

Congrats, Mark.    I'm still pretty happy with my 2009 build in a Coolermaster Centurion 5 case. Yeah, it's all obsolete, but so am I.

Yeah, I did look at the Centurion and other CoolerMaster cases, but the Cosmos II is the only one with the space and expansion capabilities I want/need, so I held out for what I really wanted.  First it was in stock, then it wasn't, then they'd found another and then they hadn't.  Oh well. I have it now, and yeah, some the hardware, going into it, though not really old, has been superceded and/or made obsolete by newer tech.  It seems these days that you no sooner take it home/get it delivered and something new has replaced it.

Yes, 12!   And no, not to accomodate my porn stash.  That'd fit on a 'floppy'... which sorta sounds appropriate.

Being I am the keeper of all backups of the extended family's photos and videos, ect, not to mention my own personal files, skins libraries, music library and backups, so the 12 drives are necessary to house it all.... cos I'd trust for none of it to be stored on the'Cloud'.  The other reason is to cut down on external drives and all the cable clutter.  This way will be alot tidier and I can use my desk space more efficiently.

Anyway, I have returned from the P/O and shall commence to put this baby...er, beastie, together.

T-twelve!!!

Yep, !2 drives.... with a shipload of family stuff on them.

T'was heavy a enough case empty, but it's gonna be one heavy mother of a rig once completed.

Anyway, I've not got alot done.  What with various interruptions and distractions, having to set up a convenient work area... then dinner, thus far I've only managed to prepare the case and install the PSU and mobo.

Friday night Footy's on now, and my team's playing, so after that and I'll get back to it.

I have 8 TB of 'drives'......512 gig of which is as fast as what you can get currently...and another  512 is on 2 separate SSDs..... on the 2 Irish Condom law...to be sure to be sure...

12 x 3 TB of HDs is enough to house the entire internet's porn content....

....last time I checked...

You might consider getting a Western Digital personal cloud drive and set it up so your family can access it over the Internet starkers. I have a 4TB one and everyone loves having access to storing and managing their own stuff on it. You can set permissions and everything, and only those you allow access to can use it.

Last time you checked, eh?   Well I'm glad somebody's keeping an eye on it... might need some recommendations once I graduate beyond the 'floppy'

I gave it some consideration a while back but decided against it.  Everybody has their own drives now and these are just backups in case of mishaps, etc.... and if anyone needs to access their stuff then they can come to me... cos I wouldn't be covering the cost of uploading that much data over the internet.... which is what would happenif I were to put it into practice.

Anyway, it has been a long day and I need some shut-eye.  I managed to get a bit more done after the footy, but the light wasn't that good and my back began to ache so I called it a night.

on Jun 05, 2015

Okay, so it's 11.04 AM and I've not as yet begun work on the beastie... though I did go have a squiz to see what a marvellously beautiful and fantastic looking case it truly is.  Yeah, I had a rough night with hip, back and neck pain, and then I woke up with vertigo.  well that is wearing off and I'll get stuck into it as soon as I've finished my coffee... some of that machine made stuff like George Clooney advertises but with frothy milk and caramel instead of sugar/sweeteners.

Anyway, I have taken some pics with my phone and will upload them soon.... when I find an alternative image hosting arrangement to Imageshack and Photobucket.  I do have a subscription for Imageshack but I can't remember my login details [were lost in a HHD demise] and I'm waiting on an email with that info, which could take a while yet, and Photobucket is a plain pain in the arse to use lately.

So, being that I'm going to be busy and won't have a lot of time today to research free and hassle-free image hosting sites, if anyone has any ideas I'd be pleased to hear... er, read them

I don't see how the drives would even come into play... everything is done through the OS drive, which manages all internet downloads, etc.

Anyway, I'm almost done building the big beastie.  Al that's left build-wise is connecting the HDDs and front panel fan sensors, tidying up last minute bits n' pieces and closing up the case.  Then it's just installing the OS and programs.  I have some pics to upload and will do as soon as I sort out image hosting.... after Saturday night footie.

Well it's all done except for connecting the front panel control centre for fan speeds/LED sensors.  Unfortunately, while the PC will start up, I will not be able to finish it until Tuesday [public holidasy Monday] because I do not have enough molex to 3-pin adapters.  I have 2 and need 8 all up, so it's a trip down the street on Tuesday to get the rest.  Mind you, it's isn't the only hiccup I encountered during the build.

While there were a few surmountable snags, a couple weren't so easily solved... both to do with the liquid CPU cooler.  The first was with the installation of the radiator and fans.  One would assume the most efficient cooling would be with the radiator inside the main frame and the fans inside the top cover, but in doing it that way I couldn't close the top cover properly.

Now there was no way on Earth I was going to hack a brand new case to make them fit, so the fans have been temporarily attached to the underside of the radiator inside the case until I can get a couple that are not so high.  There's only a couple of millimetres in it and I should be able to pick some up on Tuesday without too much trouble.

Oh, and the other snag with fitting the fans to the radiator was plug for the 8-pin ATX socket was in the way and it took some manipulation to install the rear one.  So why didn't I just wait until Tuesday and fit better/correctly fitting fans?  Because of all that waiting I was too damned impatient and wanted to turn the beastie on to see if it worked, which it does, and start setting BOIS and things up in preparation for the installation of Windows, etc.  Besides, they're only a couple of minor adjustments to put things right and they won't take long

The other issue was that the supplied screws were too short to secure the cooler head over the CPU and to the motherboard.  They were a good half inch too short and I'd have been buggered if I hadn't been able to improvise with a set of screws from a previous cooler setup.

Oh well, all's well that ends well.  Despite the hiccups and not having enough molex to 3-pin cable adapters,  I'm still pleased with my efforts and the progress made.  So I'm not quite finished, but I know the machine works... not to mention it's damned good looking and a pleasure to gaze/drool over.

The internet is awfully big, you'll need all your hard drives to store it.
